Theater District
The Chicago Theatre District pulses with an electric energy that spans decades of style and art. Historic buildings with distinctive Chicago architecture and a world-class lineup of Broadway-style shows mark the historic downtown Chicago Theatre District. Cadillac Palace, Oriental Theatre, Auditorium Theatre, and the Bank of America Theatre, located below the Hampton Inn Majestic, are major Theatre District landmarks. The Bank of America Theatre opened as the Majestic Theatre which was originally built as a mixed use theatre and office building in 1906 and was the tallest building in the city at the time. Notables such as Harry Houdini and Lily Langtry graced the stage during the height of Vaudeville. The Majestic closed during the Great Depression and was shuttered for 15 years. In 1945 the theatre was remodeled and much of the original design was retained. The Majestic stage became well-known with performances of Guys and Dolls, South Pacific, & Carousel.
